School

Well its that time of year again where our lives are going to get super busy. This year both Lilly and Owen will be going to school and I am super sad. I love my kids and would love to keep them home but that is just not the way the world works.
Today while running errands Lilly asked me a very serious question. I was surprised and beyond glad she asked but surprised non the less. Lilly asked why she and Owen do not go to a Christian school.  This has never been an option for our kids. We have never thought of sending the kids to a Christian School. We did however endeavor on the charter school scene and found that was really not for us either. Several years ago I had a great conversation with my Worship Pastors wife Kaci who is a teacher and her opinion was exactly where we were at. It was great to hear Kaci's opinion not only as a pastors wife but a school teacher.
Gary and I both believe in the mission statement of our church. Growing a community of passionate followers of Jesus Christ who impact their world. That is a very powerful statement, and we believe that Jesus wants us to impact our world.
Now what on earth does all this have to do with our kids not going to a Christian school? We believe that we are a strong Christian family, and our church is a biblical and strong Christian Church and it is necessary for our kids to be around people who don't believe in Christ. This is the only way they can impact our world. If we are around like minded people all the time how do we let our light shine for those that don't believe. As young followers of Christ I pray Lilly and Owen use those opportunities to shine and make a difference. If we stay in our small circles, moving from church, Christian school, Christian activities and so on, how does this teach our kids to shine. Its easy to believe when we are in a circle that believes the same as we do.

Be a Light in the World
Matthew 5:16
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven

Be a Servant to Others
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and to give His life a ransom for many.

  1. I believe exactly how you do, Jen. It's amazing the difference that Christian children have on a secular school. They let their lights shine every time they walk through the doors of their school, not by shining their lights in the other children's eyes but by just being who they are and who they represent. Kids don't get the Bible read to them everyday like they used to, but Jesus' light is still there by the presence of His children.
